AWEBO
Watercolour of a northern Norwegian fjord: pale mountains, still water and low birch along the shore.

Guide · free in your browser

A quiet walk in northern Norway. No timer, no score to chase.

You walk painted coastlines and a mountain, notice animals, photograph them, and keep what you find in a field notebook. Here’s how it works.

Play the Game No account. Works with mouse, touch or keyboard.

Your first minute

A short painted opening plays on your first visit. Then you’re on the trail at Tranøy.

  1. Tap ahead to walk

Click or tap the ground where you want to go. Arrow keys or WASD work too.

  2. Watch for movement

A flicker in the heather means an animal. Keep walking toward it and the camera rises.

  3. Frame and shoot

Drag the finder over the animal and press the shutter. You get three frames.

  4. Look closer

Viewpoint markers open a full picture to search. Close it and you’re back where you stood.

Wildlife and the camera

The heart of the walk: noticing something, then holding still.

When an animal appears, a short clue shows first, like “a flicker of white ahead”, then the camera view opens. Drag the viewfinder onto the animal, or nudge it with the arrow keys, and take the photo with the shutter, Space or Enter.

Three frames per encounter. A clean, centred shot keeps the animal at once. Otherwise your best frame of the three counts. Animals that move are harder: a still moment makes a sharper photo, and a bird watched for too long may grow alert and fly off.

Missed one? Nothing is lost. Keep walking and more will appear. The ✕ button lowers the camera.

What you keep, and where

The small tool row under the walk opens your log, map, camera and photo journal.

A small “kept” counter on the walk shows how much of the current place you’ve found. It stays quiet until your first keep.

Three places to explore

All three are real places in northern Norway, painted as walkable landscapes.

Getting between places

Walk to a bus stop or boat dock on the map and step aboard. The ride plays as a short journey.

TranøyBørvik

Bus, both ways

Follows the local roads by name, Tranøyveien past Hamnespollen, shortened for the game.

TranøyVardøHornøya

Boat, compressed

Hornøya is reached by boat from Vardø, far to the north-east. There is no real direct Tranøy ferry, so the passage is shown as compressed coastal travel.

Questions

Is AWEBO free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it’s free, and there are no accounts or sign-in. You just open the page and walk.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, automatically, as you play. Kept animals, sightings and journey progress are stored in your browser’s local storage on this device. There’s no save button. If your browser blocks storage (some private modes), the game shows “Progress not saved”.

Can I continue on another device?

No. Progress isn’t synced or uploaded, so it stays in the browser you played in. Clearing site data in that browser or using a different browser starts you fresh.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On phones you tap to walk and drag to aim, and the view narrows to fit a portrait screen. It needs a modern browser with JavaScript on.

Is there sound?

Wildlife calls, footsteps and the shutter, plus an optional wind drone. Wind starts off and only plays after you switch it on.

Are the photographs real?

The walking landscapes and many viewpoints are illustrations made for AWEBO. Where a real photograph is shown, it carries its own credit, and undated or out-of-season pictures are marked as reference.

What is the AWEBO bird?

The male willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus). Its spring call inspired the name. Read more on the AWEBO bird page.

The trail starts at Tranøy.
